Hi all, its me again.

Started the bike the other day to go home from work, there was a stange rattly slappy noise at the front of the engine, seemed like the timing chain but I could be wrong. Only noticed it because I did not have my lid on. What ideas has any body got before I take it to the menders and get ripped of by their suggestions. :?:

Could be chain, mine does this too even though it's had the "Upgrade".

Could be your radiator shroud and grill too.

Could be the heat shields on the exhaust.

Could be your imagination.

Some things to check:

1. Make sure the engine is cold. This is important.
2. Start engine and increase revs slowly to around 1500-1800 rpm and possibly up to 2200 rpm.
3. Listen for the rattle near the front of the engine.
4. Check again after engine is at regular operating temp.

If the rattle goes away after the engine is warm, then you need to get to your dealer right away. You have the dreaded "paint can rattle".

Mine and another Captain's Rocs are at the dealer right now. The other Roc had a catastrophic engine failure when the loose cam chain skipped a tooth ending up bending valves, etc. Luckily, I got mine in there before this happened.

I appears that there might be an increasing shortage of replacement cam chains. My dealer received all the parts to repair it (tensioner, guides, etc) except for the chain.

Triumph has been very gracious with covering this issue under warrenty even if yours has expired.

I have had a tentative quote from the from the menders (its like printing money with them). 400 quid. OUCH....

I am told by them that the noise described could be the timing chain and or it related bits, but they tell me they have hade to replace cams and head as these were scored and this makes the same noise. Does this make sense to you?, also I am told there was two chains used, one in stock and one on long term back order .This of course will be the one for mine!

To reduce the drain on the pocket and the posiblity of not having the parts, does the chain wear or is it well over rated if so I could just get the tensioner and drive sprocket changed. I know a short job but the bike is just parked up and looking sad and lost.

Your comments and opinions thankfully Received

06 R3 also had front end rattle. 4300 miles. Turned out one of my bolts that holds the upper right portion of the radiator shroud mysteriously disappeared. Assume that you've already pushed-pulled everything to check for that sort of thing. My brother had rattles in his new 07 classis. Seems the dealer forgot to tighten a few things before delivery. In fact, the shift lever fell off pulling in the driveway!!

Mine makes noises but never misses a beat runs really good so I'm reluctant to complain. I will ask them to listen at my 10,000 mile check. As I continue to ride it, it is quieter. Coming back from a 2200 mile trip in four and a half days alot of it seemed to clear up. It's a mystery to me.

Even though I've replaced the bolt in the radiator shroud, I still seem to notice rattles occasionally - a lot more so than on my Honda 750. Took it to the dealer and he rode it for a while and said there were no problems. ???? Go figure. I will say that most vehicles I've owned have had minor to major unexplainable qwerks and noises. Guess I'm more paranoid on two wheels...

Yes just try to enjoy and get a headset w/ XM radio. I don't hear noises anymore just beautiful music and a hint of roar and a whining sound.
