What damage could have been done...?

Hey all,

I have been reading intently on the "paint can rattle" issue because I have been hearing some new rattles in my 07 Classic for awhile. My engine number is higher than the one identified as the transition for having it fixed, but heard that some were still having the issue.

In addition to the rattle, my idle was jumping (not wildly...like from 800 to 1000), there was a little vibration at 2000-2200 on acceleration, and my mileage has been horrible (25 mpg).

I finally had some time to poke around today and I couldn't believe what I found. My #1 spark plug wire was sitting tall, clearly not making contact. I think I've been riding on 2 cylinders (which probably explains all my symptoms).

3 questions:

1. Am I right in assuming that this is the root cause? Or (for those of you who are more of an expert) are there some symptoms that aren't explained by this?

2. I don't know how long I've been riding like this. I assume only a couple of hundred miles (I've got 1600 miles on it) since I took it in for the idle recall only a couple of hundred miles ago and I'm hoping the dealer would have found this. What kind of damage might I have caused by riding on two cylinders over that time?

3. Now that I've re-engaged the plug wire, will a 12-minute tune fix it all up?

Thanks!

There are two plugs per cylinder, so it might have been firing part of the time too. I would run it and see how it does. Maybe an oil change in case there is some gas in the oil??

You can do the 12 min tune or just riding it over a period of time will get you the same results.

yeah i had that plug wire problem to. mine was off when i rolled it off the showroom floor made it two miles and was bothered by the ticking of that ever noticable spark grounding out. pluged it in and rolled on.
