I've got a very slow oil leak at the connection between the swinging arm and the bevel box (4 bolts) on my 2005 R3 (about 10000 miles on it). As far as I could tell from the service manual, there is no gasket at the joint. I've checked the 4 bolts, which don't seem to be loose. Is it just a matter of cranking them down tighter, or does this indicate a bigger problem?

Sniff the oil, ep oils have a distinctive unmistakable smell. If its from the bevel box, cranking the four bolts wont stop it. There is an oil seal between the input shaft and box casing and this is the only place that ep oil can be coming from at that end.

What he said. The output shaft seal can also leak engine oil. That MAY mean the dreaded output shaft bearing is going out. Are you noticing any more noise or vibration than usual?

No noise or extra vibration. Sounds like a trip to the shop is in order. Thanks for the advice!
