Stripped spark plug boot?

Okay, lets' test the technical knowledge and experience here again.......

Who among you has a source for aftermarket sparkplug boots and cables? My reason for asking is this. During the weekend I was changing sparkplugs and discovered that the rear sparkplug boot was apparently buggerd up at some point and is not making good contact with the sparkplug terminal. All the other five boots are good, but the last one just doesn't hold onto the plug like it should.

First: is there any way to fix this problem short of replacing the boot?

Second: if the boot must be replaced is there an aftermarket source?

Before you say it, I know I can replace the boot with a Triumph OEM part. The problem with that is that Triumph sells six boots as a set for $170. I would like to avoid replacing six boots because one is buggered up.

Thanks!

I don't know of an aftermarket source. You might check with a Triumph dealer and see if any other models use that same lead. They it might be easier to find a used part. I would also check with Baxter's in Iowa, he buys a lot of wrecked parts bikes. http://www.baxtercycle.com/

Now, I gotta ask.....Are the sparkplug wires carbon core or copper core? It's possible to repair a (you call it a boot), I call it a terminal. The boot is the cover over the plug body and within that cover is a crescent shaped metal (springy steel) clip that clips to the top end of the plug. Some boots hold a circular insert with a spring wire across the through hole that engages the top of the plug. Either way, they can be replaced internally, within the boot itself. Your friendly auto parts store will have the parts, cheaply, I might nadd.

I've never had the wires off the Rocket so I don't know which type it is.

"Some boots hold a circular insert with a spring wire across the through hole that engages the top of the plug. "

Yes, that is the style used on the RIII

I need to take a closer look at the construction though. My first impression is that the rubber boot is molded on to the terminal. It did not appear to be repairable, but a closer look might show that it can be.

Now, I gotta ask.....Are the sparkplug wires carbon core or copper core. Flip I believe copper core wires are illegal from the manufactures now.ROAD,, sometimes you can shove the connector back up the core with some silicone and let it set over night.I have experianced them falling apart with any movement or maintenance..Jack

You are not understanding the issue. The female connector/terminal IS THERE. It simply DOES NOT grip the male spark plug terminal.

I'm retired so I'm cheap. Here's what I'd do (now that I understand the problem)....I'd take a pair of sharp scissors and cut a strip of aluminum foil no wider than the threaded top of the spark plug, wrap a couple of turns of the foil around the tip and shove the boot on. I have the same thing going on on the T100 on the right cylinder and that's how I fixed it. The retaining wire isn't retaining anymore.

Geeze Jack....no copper anymore.......:D

Call me incredulous :eek: WHAT!!! Oh, you mean if it doesn't come out of china , it's illegal.
It is my understanding: 90% of the CCA treatment lumber in the US is lawyered away to China while no other country, outside the US, imports CCA? What does that tell you? Next, the only source you have for water is mercury tainted. Coal fired electric grids produce mercury at a minimum.

It's Still There

I just ordered 100' of copper core 7mm spark plug wire for a total cost of $26.00. I went all over town trying to locate some. I could have bought Crack or Cherry Bombs a hell of allot easier. British Cycle Supply. I think I will do my Christmas lights with it next year.
