Riding gear question

Hey, all, I have what may seem a silly question, but.....

I come from the tradition of not using gear beyond good jeans, maybe chaps, leather jacket, helmet, and I've slowly changed my equipment to the "better" gear of full face over shorty, shoulder and elbow armor jackets, gloves with knuckle armor, etc. Now it comes to upgrading pants over chaps. I want some good knee protection... hips - and not just kevlar jeans, though I'm sure they would outperform my favorite broken-in Levi's in a crash.

Are motorcycle gear pants designed (and generally) worn OVER jeans and other choices? Do people here wear them over shorts or other clothing? I'm looking at scoring both warm weather mesh and non-mesh clothing, plus perhaps some better boots, with shin guards...

Any thoughts?

99% of the time I wear everything. The only time I have issues is when it's very hot. In that case I have a cooling vest and I'll wear light running shorts under my leather over pants. My gear changes with the weather, I have jackets good for three seasons and one mesh jacket for those very hot days. I love the cooling vest!!

I'm all about comfort. Living in a warm climate, I'm usually in a half helmet and tanktop. If I have to wear boots they look like this

I guess it all varies on your safety comfort level. I have mesh pants with a zip out waterproof liner. I have worn shorts under the mesh for local riding, its comfortable in the heat. Same with the mesh jacket, sometimes a vest. I go full gear if I am highway driving, I have found that jeans under the mesh is not uncomfortable at those speeds. My choice in a liquid cooled machine benefits using more gear without roasting as much.
