Yes, there are bearings and yes they had to be replaced after being chromed. SInce I bought them used I have no idea whether or not the bearings were correct. That's the worse part of not doing things yourselve. The bearings look right but, I couldn't tell if they are the same. What I ended up doing was shimming the space with a couple of implement bushing washers. I simply took up the space by adding one washer at a time. I didn't have a precise measurerment but, after adding one thin washer I could see that I was about half there. So, I added another and it looks pretty good. I took the bike out yesterday but, it was too cold to ride very far. But so far so good. I still would feel better if I knew why I had to install any spacers. I guess the total space was no more than a 1/16".
