Really strange sound this morning....

I have a totally stock 07 R3 classic Tourer. On my way to work this morning I was only a block or so from home, riding at about 20 mph in 2nd gear (could have possibly been accelerating a bit after a turn in the road) when I hear a sound that I can describe as a cross betreen a "pop" and a "dong". Imagine if one were to hit the back of a large cast iron skillet with a hammer but there was no ringing sounds afterwards. I pulled over and thought....tire exploded or a falling bullet had hit my tank. Everything seemed fine and I continued to work without anything unusual. Is this what a backfire can sound like on an R3? Any ideas?

It could have been a combination of backfire and injector hiccup.

They can make some fairly interesting noises.

Don't hear much of that with the Jardines . . . but occasionally it'll burp or fart. :shock: :lol:

Wouldn't be too concerned unless it becomes more frequent. They you may want to take it in for a little check up and check out.

Someone also PM'ed me and mentioned that I could have thrown a rock up. I'm not too concerned at this point...but it sure freaked me out when it happened. I'd rather have had a burp or fart, at least I would have had a laugh out of it.

I guess it's could've been a rock, but didn't you say your were turning? I believe you would've felt that under your tire if it picked up a rock . . . at least one big enough to make the sound you described . . . but it's possible. :?

A stone can make a fair old noise when it hits under the front or rear metal fender - could easily be that.

This is what I'm leaning towards. If the sound I heard had come from the engine I woulddn't expect it to still be running.

I've had one or two backfires back when I had stock pipes... It can sound like you describe I guess, but mine was a true truck type backfire and I actually felt one of them under the seat... Never happened with the Jars...
