At least in my bike . A bit of a story.
First I may have described it poorly. It was a rattle for sure but not of the sheet metal type.
I went from one end of the bike to another. Found the right rear crash bar was a bit lose. Maybe 1/8 to 3/16th gap. The previous owner had installed it , and the bolt was a bit to long for the acorn nut. A flat & lock washer took care of that noise.
There was also a growling type of noise >> I rode BMW's for 30 years and the final drives would go out after running low on oil. I drained the oil. Looked bad to me . ( Amsoil Gear lube 75/140 ). Also did not look like to much for that size final drive. The dealers service manager said that they fill it to the bottom of the fill hole. Sounds good to me.
Now the real catch. When I went to put the drain bolt back into the final drive , it snapped with very little pressure. The inside looked like it had a hollow part up near the head. Tried to work it out. No luck . I had to pull the drive , take it apart , and the magnet bolt was stuck to one of the gears. The dealer had one in stock because mine was not the first one.
Put everything back together ,and it sounds great .
After 22 years in the Navy my hearing is not the best , so I may be missing some ,which is OK with me. The gear growling is what i was worried most about .
Thanks for the input. My initial thoughts were in a throwout bearing , or timing chain.

I am glad you found your trouble I normally change my rear differential grease every time I change oil but be very gentle with drain plugs as you have found out very common to strip out you're not the first and I'm sure you won't be the last have a good one :D

I also change my rear oil every time I change my engine oil. The drain plug did not strip out the threads , it sheared in two. That was with very little torque.

How do grease the diff shat, is it an easy job.

Rang Team moto Springwood today about a new Metz for the rear. $375 fitted service bloke said they remove final drive and grease shaft every time they fit a tyre.
