Hi all,

I'm Dan, a BMW enthusiast, but I had to register on this board to ask a question about a R3 for a friend of mine.

So he got the bike last weekend, a 2004 model. The problem is that then the ignition is switched on, the needle for the speedometer does not go all the way up and the back down, like the revmeter one does. Also, the odometer shows 88888888 instead of the actual bike mileage.

I have not personally seen the bike, all the info I have is from what he told me. Also, the man he bough the bike from, told him that this is a common issue, along with some bearing failing in the gearbox. :)

So, if anyone has any advice on what to check on the bike, any advice is welcome. Also, if more info is needed, please let me know and I will try to supply it.

Thanks,
Dan.

Ground on the instrument cluster if the bike starts.;)

Yes Mine did the same thing the negative cable was lose on the battery and the bike started and ran fine but the gauges did exactly as he described (laugh if you wish tighten the battery cable fixed my problem)

Of course I am no atomsplitter just a redneck from KY but it fixed my problem :D

Dang it! Right after reading this post, my odomerter, speedometer and fuel gauge stopped working!

Ah, rats.

Checked fuses, relays and battery connections -- all looked good.

Had to go, so I rode it anyhow. Everything is working except those three things.

Will play with it later, but I can't imagine what I did.

(Washed it recently, so I might've let some water in somewhere.)

UPDATE: R3T speedo, odometer failure

Well, I left my R3T with the dealer. They called me a couple of hours later with the news: The speed sensor failed and needed to be replaced. :(

Fortunately, it WAS a warranty fix. The part was about $175, so that was covered. I only paid $195 for the labor and was out the door within a week.

As many of you might know (I didn't:confused:), the odometer, speedometer and fuel gauge failure is directly linked to the speed sensor. The other electrical components in the instrument cluster still worked.

OK, not bad. It's a 3-year old bike and parts wear out.

Again, great service from my dealer (Rocket Motorcycles in San Diego).
