Hi i'm not exactly a rocket owner but my father is (just helping with the computer bit)

Any way he has a 2005 rocket and it has done 46000Km/s without any major problems other than the recall on the idle control unit at around 30000Km/s, unfortunately he has since come across an oil leak coming from the drive shaft seal at the end of the gearbox, he is beginning to wonder if there is a problem with the bearings on the output shaft but the gearbox is running fine there has been no change to it (he has decided to park it up as he fears damage could be caused to the gearbox).

Has anyone had this problem or have any ideas?

Thanks

Kia Ora,

I can't help with your technical question, but welcome to the site and look after Dads' Rocket, you stand to inherit it one day.

cheers man, still hopping some one could shed some light, cause at the moment he's looking at a bill of $4000 just to have a shop open it up and look at it not including parts or putting it back together, at this price its looking at a long hibernation for the poor bike.

One Rocket owner had a seal go in the diff and the oil found it's way up to the rubber boot near the output bearing. Check the smell of the oil, diff oil has a more pungent smell than engine oil. Check the diff oil level as well.

Hi Leon.. I have the 05 and I had exactly the same problem with the drive shaft leaking oil it was spotting on the rear wheel rim.. I had the oil seal replaced without strip down.. Can be done with mechanics know how..anyway it leaked again and the local triumph dealer advised the bike shop that output shaft bearing was on its way out causing the drive shaft to float in the seal and pump the oil out..

Result was an engine upgrade Kit courtesy of Triumph my bike 11000 Ks in 2009.
But I had to pat the 20 hours labour cost for fitting the kit.

Sorry to be the Bearer of Bad News.. you could try a new seal but it was 2004 and up that had the design problem so at 46000 dad has done well against my 11000.

Hope this Helps

G'day Leon. Sorry but I can't help with your Dad's problem but looks like Dennsell is onto it. Bit of a bummer that. Good to have you on board though and it would be good to hear from you or your old man about how he's going at some stage.

thanks for the welcome bit of a shame that we joined under theses circumstances.

thanks Dennsell for the info

so apparently our Triumph shop has contacted Triumph and Triumph have said they wont have anything to do with it unfortunately but that's kind of fair considering its long past its warranty.

so at the moment he is quite busy so the rocket will have to wait for a month or two, but when he gets the time him and his mate are going to pull it apart and check everything gearbox wise thoroughly and change the bearing and seal or what ever needs to be changed

I had a problem with an oil leak from same area but it was coming from a seal on the rear diff and running down the shaft housing. The solution was a new diff box .
