I have a noise and vibration on decel @ 1600 down to about 1200 rpm. Sounds like a howling, I can feel vibration in the floor boards, rear shocks, mostly left, in the swing arm up to the engine. If I put my hand on the engine where the shaft goes in I really can't feel any. It seem like it does it right @ the point where the engine braking stops and it starts free wheelin, also if I pull in on the clutch, it stops howling. I thinking drive shaft or rear axle bearings maybe. any ideas where to start would be great

Thx

John

What you riding captainJ ?
I see from your "join date" you're probably on a '07 or earlier so
have you had any upgrades done?
Kinda sounds like an output shaft bearing,
but you'd notice it when it was rolling along just taking off mostly.
After that, the wind would block the sound.
At least it did on mine.
probably depends on your exhaust tho.
Tell us more.

hey Skip, how are you? riding an 07 classic, I had some clutch upgrade done but that's about it. running jardine exhaust, can still hear it though

oooooooooooookk , think I'll tear the rear axle bearings and drive shaft apart, start there

If you pull in the clutch and it stops howling, what are the odds the problem is in the driveline/rear axle? They're still turning. I'd suspect something in the clutch basket/lifter area if lifting the plates stops the noise.
Just my 2 cents.

I think the clutch basket is a little out of balance, I just had Triumph tear it apart last summer, another " 8 WEEKS of NO RIDING !!!! " and they replaced springs and lifter piece, it had a vibration in it then. That's what I was complaining of when I took it there. I even talked to Peter from Triumph and both he and the dealer said it was normal. go ahead and ride it. So I probably only put about 800 miles on it since then and now this. I was ready to trade it in this spring because I want something i can ride, now this. I'm tired of paying for something I can't ride. I really like the bike but when I want to go, I want to go. Anyway the noise sounds like it's coming from the rear axle or driveshaft area, I can put my hand on the left rear shock and feel a lot of vibration. I do think the bike has a clutch problem though but I'm told it's the nature of the beast. When the bike had 3500 miles on it I got a vibration in the clutch, took it to the dealer, they did clutch work and everything was just fine for 20000 miles then the same vibration came back so back to the dealer we go for 6 to 8 weeks of down time, " IN THE MIDDLE OF SUMMER " the bike came back no better then what it was. If I could just it fixed so i could ride it and depend on it, I would be happy. Anyway that' why I'm here, asking for suggestions, the problem may be in the clutch and the vibration is transmitting through the shaft. I just want to get it fixed.

Maybe it's the dreaded output bearing and pulling the clutch lessens the load just enough to stop the howling? Sounds possible given where you're feeling the vibes.
Maybe others who've lost that bearing can chime in here.
I feel your pain with summer finally coming up.

I was thinking about the output shaft bearing, if it's something I can fix myself I want to fix it, if I have to take it to a dealer this will be three outta four summers that I owned it and it was down for 4 to 8 weeks at a time. I really like the bike but not worth it if I have to go through this almost every year
