Greetings. Name is Dave. Bought my '06 R3 new, rode twice to Iowa and back from Bakersfield, Ca. and only have about 38,000 miles. Was thinking about adjusting the valves, looks like a real job though. I have the repair manual, but would like to see a video if there is one available. I've been taking care of my own maintenance with the exception of the tires. Gotta go for now.

Not aware of a video, but a search here and on .com will turn up lots of useful info..

Have you checked to see if they are within spec yet? If they are out then the errant ones will need shims changed. That takes a bit of time, and the correct shims. However, if they are still withing spec then that is much easier.
 
Welcome....I have an 08 touring and also try to maintain my own bike. I have done 2 valve checks so far; 10k and 30k. Although intimidating at first, if you are mechanically inclined you can do it. I tag each connector and keep a list of each step I do as far as removing items, and then try to re-install them in the same order. All the electric plugs seem to be different so you can't plug something in wrong but if you don't keep track( I tag each plug), you may forget to plug one back in...Then the troubleshooting comes in!!
Also, don't plan on anything else.....dedicate your time 100% until the job is complete....You can do it!!

One note: in the event you have tight valves, and have to remove the cams to change shims, I haven't been there yet...

the valve clearances are the only thing I have so far had a dealer do but am planning on finding out the correct tool needed and will do myself next time, when I say tools I know there is a cam holding tool needed if you have to lift cams not say you do have to but there is bound to be others. I know from past experience that some bikes need certain clamp type tools to depress the buckets be able to change shims.
Don't attempt this type of maintenance unless you are confident as one small f##k up can cost you dearly
