Off to SoCal on Friday (if possible) and my 2012 R3R has just developed a confusing problema.

When rolling the bike forward or back, or rotating rear wheel while off the ground, I have a rather serious clunk emanating from the axle or final drive area.

Thinking wheel bearings (which I replaced for PM last year) or God forbid, final drive, I began to remove the rear wheel today. Surprisingly, I discovered that after the rear axle nut was loosened the clunk totally disappeared! Tightened it back up and the clunk returned. WTF?

Whent ahead and removed rear wheel and after close inspection of the final drive, found nothing amiss. Looks as fresh and clean (excluding grease of course) with no fragments or signs of wear. Also checked bearings and they rotate smoothly with no side play.

ANY SUGGESTIONS OR IDEAS????

When my output shaft bearing went on my 05, It was difficult to pinpoint where the noise was coming from. Hopefully it's not your problem but worth checking. See if you can find room to pry off the rubber gaiter where the drive shaft exits the motor. See if there is any play. I have not heard of the problem with any rockets as new as yours. good luck

didn't you already have this problem on the run around the peninsula last year??

I replaced all rear wheel bearings. The sound (a click) went away and I thought it fixed.
This is a more pronounced and deeper sounding clunk. About to dig deeper and separate the bevel box from the swing arm.

Thanks for the response.
I shall check for play.

well let us keep our fingers crossed that it might just be a simple ( inexpensive ) problem

Did you check the rear brake caliper and make sure that it was installed correctly, if not that could cause the sound you are hearing.

I have seen 3 or 4 rockets that the caliper did not get fitted back into the hole correctly

Just throwing ideas out here you did tighten the rear nut to the correct torque setting? hope all turns out okay and you make it to SoCal and if you see my wife please tell her I am starving.

I did so.
In fact, after disassembling everything, re-greasing and re-assembling, I determined the noise started back when I reached 30 foot pounds of the 81 necessary.
Going to remove and replace the three bearings again tomorrow.
We shall then see what up!
