My idle problem finally solved!

After a year or so and two unsuccessful trips to the dealer, I finally decided to tackle this idle problem myself, and solved it in about 30 minutes.

I took a T25 hex bit and loosened the primary TPS. With the bike running kind of rough, idling at 3,000 RPM, I moved the TPS back and forth. I discovered that the TPS is nothing more than an adjustable main jet. Turn it one way, you get too much fuel.. turn it the other way, you run too lean. So, by ear and feel, I gently moved the TPS until the my bike was running really smooth.. Still idling at 3,000 RPM, but running very smooth.

Then, there's a 7 MM nut on what I suppose is a solenoid to control idle and for cold starts. I turned it in, bringing the idle down to about 800 RPM. Then took the bike for a test ride. It ran great!!! Except for a small hesitation at about 1200 RPM. So, I raised the idle up just a bit to about 850-900 RPM. (I was suspecting low idle, or the 'accelerator pump' feature in my PCIII.) After adjusting the idle up just a bit, the hesitation was gone! I then let the bike do a '12 minute' tune.

This will be the second day riding the bike to work and back ( 70 mile round trip ) and the bike drops right back down to idle every time and runs probably smoother than she ever has! I will keep tabs on it, of course, but wow!

Glad you was able to resolve the problem yourself. but I think if it were me I would find a way to verify what it is setting at and put the bike back on a dyno to verify that your accelerator pump is set where it needs to be also.
The big thing is that you were able to get the bike running back to normal and I'm sure it has replaced that frown with a grin again.

Great stuff! My occasional high idle problem seems to have disappeared after a high-speed 2 hour ride I took last weekend, perhaps I cleaned something out or freed something up, I sense it is to do with the accelerator (the only way to get a normal idle would be to kill the engine and restart, maybe have to do this twice to get back to normal) again, I suspected a problem with a sticky TPS - i do a lot of low speed stop/start 20-30mph riding in traffic an that is when the problem usually surfaces, after the engine gets hot. I'm putting the bike in for a bunch of upgrades next week and will ask the tech (seems very competent) to check out the TPS - I mentioned the problem last time he had the bike tho and he couldn't replicate it, it IS very intermittent...

Remember to check amd clean the crank angle sensor every 3-5000 miles as Gothlander has suggested, as it can collect metal shavings and cause an idling and some other problems with these bikes!

Tune Up

People

Hello there, , I've been reading a lot about the problems regarding tuning of the Rocket III in threads on this site.
So far I have not read any comments about purchasing the Triumph Diagnostic Tool.

I have the workshop manual for my bike (2006 Rocket 3 Classic) with all the necessary 'tune codes' but not the Tool. I understand that you also need a password to activate this TOOL (supplied by Triumph)?
My bike is starting to show signs of over revving after I changed the throttle cable (no its not the cable route or sticking).

I hear a lot about Tune Boy but what about this Tool? Is it available? Is it cheaper than Tune Boy (you don't need a Laptop). And most important does it do the trick?

I am surprised we don't have a thread answering these questions.....???

I am not sure but I have a feeling that this "tool" is available only to Triumph dealers. I could be wrong...it does happen.

Bear has been having a serious "idle" problem too
he has been making awful threats about his bike
he took it to dealer last month and paid $600 for that visit and it didn't even fix it
took it back again last week
they worked on it all morning that visit was another $60
but still having serious idle problem
I had him read all of the idle related threads here
he tore his bike apart again yesterday
he disconnected step motor (if I have it right) and now it is running great
he called and reported what he found to dealer
they said they have never had to change one out before but they are to check with factory to see if they can get a replacement without it costing him more money

he rode lots today and no problems except the idiot light is on now because that part is disconnected
if they don't do him right i think he will be getting rid of it and getting some other kind of bike

all I know is I have never had any problems with my bike and I have over 25000 miles on mine. When it time for the next big tuneup I hope they don't change anything about how it runs

Trumph Diagnostic Tool

Thank you all for your replies. Tune boy sounds like the way to go I did find a cost for the Triumph Tool $6000.00 Aus ! Then only available to dealers...they got ya by the proverbial balls guys. And I thought Harley Davidson was bad......

Idle Problem solved

I had a idle problem and it seamed intermittent at first then would stall all the time I UN MOUNTED THE STEPPER MOTOR,
THAN STARTED THE BIKE
Found THE STEPPER MOTOR WAS NOT MOVING THE FULL THROW BUT SEAMED TO WAS TRYING Replaced STEPPER MOTOR
PROBLEM SOLVED

Sunshine.. I believe Bear has found the culprit.. as I think I have. Once I adjusted the idle adjustment on the stepper motor, I haven't had a problem since. Sorry I have not called him, but it sounds like he's in the right area. I am terrible with my phone...
