Iddle stepper motor protection :

With the risk of people having a laugh at my expense - I will now expose (again) my total lack of mechanical knowledge.

I've heard a lot about this stepper motor. This is the first time someones shown me a picture so I know what it is.

Now, can someone tell me what it does?

Look at page 175 of workshop manual CD if you have it. That will give you an idea.
Tried to cut and paste but couldn't

Might be page 173 its a bit weird the way its numbered

It controls your idle, it is what makes your bike rev slightly and then return to normal when you start your bike.
That's all I can tell you, I'm not sure if it does anything else.

I've only got the manual on a pdf file, and to be honest, life is too short to go fishing in that pond. Pages 173/5 didn't apply.

Seems like a lot of clockwork to just control the idle. What happened to a good old fashioned screw? (If you pardon the expression)

Looks like it would protect well from the elements, however I would be more concerned about shielding it from the engine heat. It appears like it would be counterproductive in that department. :?
