How do you know whats good?

So from what I can understand, the amateur mapping enthusiast can instal the recommended tunes , safe in the knowledge that more experienced tuners have done the necessary tinkering and layed out the relevant wonga ( thats dollars for you yanks) ! What I and probably other tuning novices want to know is whats the result in real world biking terms? gaining 10 horsepower or getting that immediate grunt at low revs is something you can definately feel but 2 or 3 bhp gains, I dont know so much. I think like Hellfire says that when you can combine maybe 4 or 5 things together that work well then its a definate bang for your buck ! Gonna stop rambling now , guinness and forums are not good !

Had a PC111 on her for awhile.
I had the K&N's on,
my custom 3 into 1 exhaust,w/ baffel out,
Don't think I had the GiPro yet.
But regardless, it sucked.
couldn't find a canned tune that worked with what I had,
so took it to a dynotuner.
Cost me $300. and didn't run any better,
he reset sh** and altered the fuel trim,
but it still wasn't even close to right.
Rode it for awhile and popped for the Dobeck EFI controller.
Lost the decible pop instantly.
Ran like a scalded ape,
or at least I thought it did till I got the GiPro.
Then I found out what scalded apes really run like.
Anyway now its running rich.
I'd like to try the freeware because tuneboy is just as complicated and costs alot more.
None of the dyno tuners around here know tuneboy, so that leaves me to figure this freeware thing out on my own.
i need THE IDIOTS GUIDE TO TUNE ECU FREEWARE

The stock Triumph tunes all limit peak torque (between about 2500-3200 rpm) by closing the secondaries in the lower gears. There's an obvious dip on the power curve. Using Tuneboy, I opened the secondaries 100% in all gears. I gained back 10-12 ft lbs - on the dyno. I just happened to drive it home with the restricted tune. Did I notice it? Not at the time. You're right that you probably won't notice a few peak HP - unless you race for time.

I don't think it is unusual that many so-called Power Commander shops don't know what they're doing. It's like anything else.

I think you're right Doug.
Which brings me back to needin to figure this freeware out.
Cause once again, I'm gonna change my pipes out,
into something different.
That's the problem with riding and owning harleys for all them years.
I "like" different, not out of the box stuff.
anybody can buy pretty bolt on parts,
but then you've got what everybody else has,
just a different color, or setup just a little differently.
Might as well buy a harley if you want what everybody else has.
That ain't for me, I "Like" different.....

I'm glad your bike runs well. I don't see any advantage adding hardware to manage things you can do better with software.
Lets see .... I wanted a gear position indicator, the GiPro did that and more.
I wanted it dyno tuned ONCE, one time and done ... the PCIII took care of that.
I wanted the ECM out of the throttle control business ... removed the secondary's.
It needed to breath ... replaced the exhaust and added triple K&N's.

With those needs taken care of, why would I want to use software to lobotomize my ECM?

If I ever sell it, either myself or the new owner can put it back stock in a flash. The new owner need not worry that it's been altered in any way other than what you see on the outside.

That's why.

You might have missed my point about the tunes ... just downloading someone else's canned tune doesn't unlock the potential of the individual bike. They all might be R3's with similar add-ons, but they are still individuals and need custom tuning for the best results. That's why I suggested a PCIII for "novice's" to take it to a tuning tech for tweeking. Power commander products are common and it's easy to locate a shop that works with it.
After I finished with installing exhaust, intake etc., I loaded the D&D, Triples w/secondaries removed canned tune from Power Commanders website. It ran good and I could have left it that way and been happy, but I wanted it really tuned and took it in for the dyno-tune.
They netted another 14hp and 11 foot pounds by customizing the trim, plus I KNOW that it's right ... not too rich, not too lean. And that's true throughout the throttle and RPM range.

Peace of mind and more power for an additional $200 ...

I know what you"re sayin HellFire,
an I've got "almost" the same setup as you.
No secondary's, GiPro 4 K&N's,
the only difference is our exhausts.
The canned tune just didn't work for me.
The dyno guy didn't help with the decibel pop,
so I thought, I'll control the fuel myself with the Dobeck,
and it was alot better.
no popping, hauls a**, you know.
Now I'd like to "fine tune" it,
after i get my new pipes from Sam that is.
Just need / want to learn this Tune ECU freeware so I can do it well,
you know how it is, I want to do it myself
and know exactly why I'm doing what I'm doing...
i don't want to pay somebody for something I can learn to do better.

when you write the book tuneECU for dummies send me a copy cause I am at loss when it comes to computer

I agree with what your saying Hellfire but i am going to try tune ecu with my bike because from what ive been told the pcIII isnt compatible with my rocket being a 09 model and the pcv isnt ready yet. "if anyone has a pcIII on a 09 and im wrong please set me straight" I will probably change to the pcv when available and a dyno tune but i need something temp because i did the k&n tors cat secondaries and gpro atre + o2 sensor and will run 2 lean. However the one thing im not sure i agree on is that its easier to change back the powercomander cant i save my original tune with tune ecu and simply reload it at will?
again im new to this stuff so correct me if im wrong
