There was a slew of bad components on a fair number R3s made prior to 2008 when the factory corrected the major ones. Triumph came of with a package called the "update kit" to address those gremlins. It only costs abot $250, but will run you between $1,500-$2500 to have the kit installed as it involves pulling and cracking open the engine.

If you can find a pre-2008 that's had that work done - go for for it - otherwise buying a 2008 model, or later, is good advice.

You probably won't have to pay much more for a newer model. If you can live with the riding position (sorry TC ) I'd look at a 2010+ Roadster for the sole reason it has ABS. Otherwise, an 08/09 is the way to go, especially if you want an actual cruiser and/or something other than black.

Maybe we need a survey. My '05 is going strong, shifts smooth with no update kit. Starts great with no Eastern beaver.

You have been given input and advice .. agree with the others , purchase as late a model as you can afford. Preferably a black engine model as they had sorted most if not all the issues found with the earlier models .. no offence to any of the silver engine Owners.

My '07 Std. has a black engine and a complete update kit had to be installed by it's original owner, TC.

I am making another 2 hour drive next week to look at a 2014 roadster. Any input on things to look for? Bike is preowned, but has less than 300 miles.
Any reason I would be better off with an 08-13 roadster model?

Picked up a 2014 roadster. Now I am wondering how to lower seat height a few inches. I am appx 5'9" and it seems a bit tall.
