In regards to the smell, look behind the oil tank on the left side and see if there is an oil leak there. Some have found that the tank had not been properly seated. It also may be cosmoline (sp?) which Triumph sprays on the bikes prior to crating and shipping to protect them while shipping them over the pond. Rockets are also known for their strange knocks and noises. There is a lot of engine under you.
