Front end vibration and wobble fixed (Long story)

Have the same problem, had the front Metz changed for an Avon and at 30-50 klms/hr if you take your hands off the bars the headshake is a shocker. I thought the tyre must have been out of balance cause it didn't happen before the new tyre so I had it remounted / rebalanced. Couldn't detect any movement in the headstock bearings when it was jacked up, but it is till the same. Hoping the nut is not tightened to spec cause if it is to spec it's going to get a bit extra.
 


i have been curious about this for a long time. when i got mine with 6000 miles i think that it had a little preload on it. if you put a slight pre load on it make sure it does not bind at full side to side movement.
if you get it fixed almost every body is interested.
 
+1 let us know how you get on with this Graham. @gra53 you know if you over tighten the steering head it will be near impossible to ride in a straight line at slow speed.
 
No problems getting to it, 2010 Roadster, plenty of length in the cables and with the screen kit fitted it all that is needed is a bit of tape around a screwdriver to protect it and the triple tree can be easily lifted off. 38mm socket and tightened to 40nm as per manual, backed it off, and re-tightened it to 10nm - not as per the manual, but what a difference. I checked for any binding and the wheel moved freely from lock to lock. Haven't taken it above 80klms/hr, but it didn't have a problem above 80. At 30-50 it is stable as, also if you hit the lane markers before it jolted the front wheel a bit, no problem now. Can't say how much I tightened it because when I backed it off I forgot to count the turns, but guessing it is tighter by 90 degrees from the mark. Tightening up to 40nm certainly puts a load on it. (It was pretty loose to begin with)

I just simply tightened mine up, it helped. However all was not resolved until I removed the front and rear wheels to mount tires, then my experience lining up mechanical's kicked in and all is well.
 



I AM ASSUMING THAT after you tighten it to 10nm that you then backed it off 90 degrees?

i would think that the preload (load) should not exceed 5 inch pounds.

Nope, not 90 degrees, just backed it off, the wheel drops side to side with no effort. That plastic cover under the nut isn't going to make for any accurate adjustment anyway. Might not be recommended by the manual, but preferable to being borderline on having headshake.
