Agreed, it does look confusing when you first try to interpret it, however, I'll see if I can clarify it for you and any others that also have trouble interpreting what it's displaying.
Along the top are the 4 rider modes.
Lets just look at them one at a time.
Right, at the top right is "Rider" below it is the ABS section. This displays what the default setting is for this mode and what options you have. For the ABS, it's shows a solid dot (this being the default setting from factory) there are no other options to select, so ABS is always on in "Road" setting - for every riding mode as it happens.
Next section below that is the MAP. Under Rider (same column) there is a solid black dot by the Road setting, this once again is the default & also happens to be Road setting. This time though you have the Option of selecting "Rain" MAP Throttle response or "Sport" Throttle response. This is indicated by the O displayed.
Last section is the Traction Control (TC)
In this section the default setting for Rider mode is also "Road" setting, but you have 3 options here, "Rain" "Sport" or "Off".
Basically looking at the chart, Rider Mode is set up the same as Road Mode until you configure it to what you'd like.
Now you just work across each of the modes, look at the solid black dot & that's the default for that item in that mode.
It's hard to write this out, but it's real easy to interpret once it clicks.
Hope this helps guys.
