2014 Victory Vision Tour
The rear Metz is wearing down. I have maybe 1500 miles left on it. Dark side? Any tires that you would give a high rating too compared to others. I know the Riken Raptor is popular. The Toyo Proxes has a following as well. This is a 2006 Classic with Progressive HD's in OEM length. Trailer hitch will be going on soon as well. More straight line riding but numerous trips to the mountains every year. I had looked at the Nexen N3000 as a possibility based on tread pattern and ratings for speed etc.

Not to go off topic from the Darkside but I purchased the Cobra's when they first came out.... changed both front and rear at the same time and have approx. 5,000 mi. on them now. They are showing little signs of wear.... dont get me wrong they do have wear.... but little..... very unlike the metz. did at that point. I like them better then the Metz. Some state they have less traction in the rain but I have not experienced this. Just throwing that out there...........Good Luck

I'm new to the dark side. Have about 800miles on an Achille platinum 195/60/16 from tires-easy.com and am happy with the results.

josey i think u will like the darkside you have seen how mine handles the curves and straight
i use to have a list of car tires for the rocket but lost it while moving some stuff to here but maybe if tdragger reads this he will give u a list like he did me

Everybody likes their tire of choice but,, you will have to get used to whatever brand you buy.
I got the bf goodrich, it took me 10 minutes to get used to it, i rode Skips and it felt diferent, he rode mine and it felt different for him but im comfortable with mine and he is comfortable with his, i think as long as you buy the tire with the correct speed rating you will be happy!!:)

Yep, Riken Raptor ZR in 225/55-16 seems to be the most popular with the Toyo Proxes TR-1 propably the next most popular. The Goodyear Eagle is also popular but more expensive.

NOTE: my comments below apply to R3 Standard, Classic and Roadsters only. The Touring model uses a different size rear tire and I have no experience with it.

If you go to www.tiresavings.com and perform a search on 225/55-16, you will get a list of about 50 choices. Probably 20 are viable options for your selection.

Two things that I would avoid based on comments from other Captains:

1) stay away from tires that advertize a "rounded" profile like the Cooper Zeon. It sounds odd but the people that have run the Cooper have reported some odd effects.

2) avoid profiles that have a wide, continuous center rib like the Yokohama S.Drive. The wide rib tends to capture rain grooves more so than others. The Riken center rib is rather narrow with a ripple profile and I don't notice any adverse twitching on grooved roadways.

The size debate is also something to consider. A tire sizing calculator will tell you that the 225/55-16 is just a few percentage points larger in diameter than the stock 240/50-16. This aids in correcting the speedo slightly and, in my experience, has helped with the gas mileage a bit.

Others have gone with larger profiles but if you are considering pulling a trailer then you might want to consider staying with the narrower profile of the 225/55.

The Riken works well for my needs and riding style. It's not the more aggressive looking of the darkside options, but it works.

Good luck in your search.

Thanks fellers. I'll be using a "country boy" garage to mount it, any advice I should give them in advance? I have recently read no Dynabeads, yes to static balance, etc.
