Dealer closing - sad news

I've seen their shop from a distance, but planned to stop in on my next trip to the Birmingham. Very sad news, but how could a dealer located close to Barber be in a situation to close down?

I wouldn't be too quick to say it was poor service or lack of parts/accessories (though it could be on the parts) in regards to Bogarts. It was more likely that they ran into what a lot of dealers are running into these days...little traffic thru the showrooms, carrying several lines of motorcycles, in this part even if one line (say Triumph) is doing well but the others are sluggish, keeping salespeople, parts people, service department employees and the owners paid may be what breaks the proverbial camel's back...not to mention the overhead.

My dealer (D&D Cycles in Pensacola) just completed a major addition onto the original building and did a complete renovation on it and this was all completed just as the slowdown in the economy hit. They appear to have sold lot's of bikes, and have a good reputation as far as maintenance and repair of bikes, so they may not be doing as bad as some dealers are but I can easily see that with the new debt they incurred for doing that major renovation could easily be a "heavy" load to carry as far as meeting payroll and maintaining a "healthy" dealership.

Hope they can pull thru this.

Just a sign of the times

Here in Virginia we are down to three Triumph Dealers in the whole State. In my humble opinion it is just the downturn in the economy. Recently I have ordered several aftermarket and OEM parts for my bikes. In every instance the parts have been on back order regardless of the size of the vendor. In my own place of employment we are carrying about one third of the inventory we had on the racks five years ago. Sadly I still believe we haven't seen the worst of it yet even if the financial experts are claiming the depression is over.

Ha! Good one....financial experts as recognized by who???

A lot of these shops are very small, which tells me they likely didn't have much operating capital to begin with. Frankly, my experience (I'm an Accountant) has been that most businesses that go out of business were woefully underfunded and, of course, can't sustain even a slight downturn in business, much less a recession.

And yes, the recession is over. Does that mean everything is rosey? No. We still have a long way to go to recover from its effects.

One more bite the dust !

The lately passed recession has given me depression.:(
