I suggest everyone check this out on your R3's. I felt like this was very important, as most of us know how important it is to have all those cell phone talking, SUV hauling ass soccer moms possibly/maybe notice your brake light when your stopping. Of course, there is the other 50% that could care less, even if they see your dinky little brake light. I probably just got a bum switch, one in 100,000 but I think it's worth reporting to everyone.
The rear brake light switch is NOT like the front brake switch on the handle bars. Instead, the rear switch looks like it is triggered by fluid pressure. Anyway, the other night I was riding around and I was coming up on a traffic light, so I was lightly pressing on the rear brake pedal to slow down. I was looking in my rear view mirrors a noticed that I didn't see any extra red glowing from the tail lights. As soon as I pushed the front brake, I could see the red glow on the ground. While at the light, I pressed the rear brake lightly, and noticed my rear light started tinkling...just like a short, BUT when I pressed heavy on the rear brake pedal, light worked normal. I did everything I could to pop my foot hard on the pedal with short fast hard hits, and It still does not work correctly when I lightly push the brakes. This obviously is not a wire short, it must be an internal problem with the switch itself. And to clear up my term "lightly" , it is just enough pressure to come down from 50 mph to zero in about 10 to 12 seconds. I have a 2007 model, so it's not as if it's wore out from old age.
Here's where the switch is located:
There is a steel brake fluid line that runs from the rear brake foot pedal/master cylinder to a transition area where the steel line turns to flexible brake hose. This transition area is where the switch is located....not more than a hands width from your starter. Its on the right side, right where the trailing arm swivels.
