Broken Detent Spring

Warp, just completing that replacement on my touring (I believe the photo is my actual lifter piece), although I did not make the measurement, it seemed to have the same in/out play in the input shaft as my original...That's why I did not use the washer with the new lifter piece...The in/out play was about 1/6"with the the washer on the original and without the washer on the new lifter piece.
Also, it seems the part # T1170203 (lifter piece) corresponds to the 2 current upgrades and it may be difficult for others to realize the difference and whether or not to re-use the washer!

For those that do not realise it there is a alignment hole in the basket to help you get both gears of the backlash eliminator ligned up so the basket slides on just use a drift to take up the tension on the springs. green pencil points to the area the drift is used in. Or you can do it the hard way with a couple large screw drivers on the gear teeth. Believe the hard way will work but it is not the best way.

this slot is also in the MTC basket

If this is not your problem and the basket will not go all the way on then your oil pump drive dogs are not engaged in the drive holes of the basket. Here is a shot of the back of the basket showing the drive holes for the pump. there are six of them

@warp9.9 I think I may have to undertake changing the detent spring in a friends 05 standard in the near future. There is some difficulty downshifting from 2nd to 1st. What parts do I need to order prior to jumping into this?

Detent spring of course along with the clutch cover gasket. and the clutch basket nut. Other then that it is a 05 so it probably has the old style clutch lifter mechanism which you can say if there is nothing wrong with it there is no need to update it until the lifter shaft or lifter piece fails. As for fibers well depending on the mileage they could be fine. You can reuse the water pump gasket which is a O ring thin one but add some permatex or as I prefer Hylamar and it will be fine.
