Battery again

Hi guys,

Hope everyone is great and enjoying the early summer (). I got my motorcycle out from storage last week and it was parked on the street while it was rain and cold since last few days. Yesterday night when I switched it on, it turned on and after 3-4 seconds its turned off. I tried to switch it on again but it won't
the engine only cranks up but doesn't start. So I guess the battery is dead. I saw one more issue, Even if I take the keys off, the odometer indicators (engine, oil, gear etc) are still turned on. I don't understand why. Any suggestion friends?

Sounds like some sort of shorting...done the headlight relay mod yet? if not, mebbe the ignition barrel wires have melted together....

Head lights turn on and off with keys but odometer LEDs are always turned on. So shall I tow it to the dealer or just take the battery out and charge it? What do you think?
 
Something's live when it shouldn't be... if you don't know your electrics,( & I don't really) I'd disconnect the batt ( NEG lead first!) & get it towed.
If you DO like to play, the first thing I'd check is the ignition leads into the barrel. It's a pita to get out( the barrel) with 2 anti theft screws that need drilling out, but a lot of guys have had solder joints melt here, as the headlight current is passed thru the ignition wires. The headlight relay mod bypasses this problem, & is easy to do.
I'm guessing somethings melted & shorting.
 

Hmm I'm no expert and I might need to get it towed...thanks a lot for your suggestion myte! ;-)
 
If the eng turns over wen you hit the strarter button baterie is not dead but if you have insterments wen key is off and out of bike you do have a problem with your switch . That would be my guess I just had to have mine soldered back together but I had lost all power . Nothing was burnt inside my switch so it was fixable . The switch is a real pain to get out some are worse than others I took my whole switch out then poped the plastic couver off the bottom and we were able to solder the white wire back on I did not pull the other two tamper proof screws out to look at the contacs If you are not big on patence its no fun

Mines in the shop right now for the same problem. I figure mine is the ignition switch as it sounds like its your problem also. At least yours was home. Mine quit when I was 200 miles from home.:x

Thanks for the response. I recently replaced the ignition switch because i had lots of problems with old one. Today morning I left my motorcycle with those odometers light on and went to office . In the evning when I came back the odometer indicator lights were off and when I put the leys in they worked fine (they were turning ON and OFF with keys which means there is no SHORT problems ..I guess???) but the engine still doesn't start it just cranks up and then goes down. So I took the battery out and now I am going to buy some battery charger and charge it. lets see if that works
 
Thanks but I am wondering if something is melted or short, how it is working fine now? don't know...i'll have to charge the battery and check again may be....
 
or do wat the rest of us do and hook the jumper cables up to it from your car then they realy wind over good just dont spin it for more than 5 seconds as the starter and wires will get hot if it dont start after a couple trys you have other isues
 
I had a similar problem after heavy rain. Engine management light and oil light on with out the ignition key. I have even had the analogue clock hands spinning backwards like a windmill. I have even had this idiot light problem when riding in torrential rain. It is water getting where it shouldn't. I regularly lift the tank and spray the wiring loom and ignition switch with WD40 or some other water repellent electrically safe spray. It has sorted it. I still mean to pull all the block connectors on the loom and grease them but that's another day.
