Am I a Poser??

Boots is boots?

Protection to feet, ankles, and shins if the worst happens.

Thanks Bob. Tripps - your story certainly gives me pause.

I do have a pair of motorcycle "boots" that I bought early on... they come no higher up my ankle than my hi-tops (but they do have the cool reinforcement for the shifter)... I'm assuming those aren't the best thing either.

Not a poser at all. In fact you sound a lot like me.

Definitely get some good riding boots and always wear gloves. Helmet is not a bad idea either.

I'll probably get flamed for this but I think gloves are more important than a helmet.
I have a half helmet that I sometimes wear. It's the only one I can find that is comfortable.

I don't know about more important, but just as important, without a doubt. I had a get off about 40 years ago while riding without gloves, that was the last time I ever put a leg over a bike without gloves if I was going anywhere on it. It took a very long time before I could do simple things, like wiping my azz, without difficulty.

Sometimes you just have to weigh the risks vs benefits (or comfort) and make a decision to ride like you want. There have been many times this summer I have ridden home from work with my mesh jacket in the saddlebag, just because it has been hotter than hades at times, and the stop and go traffic wearing a jacket, even mesh, is uncomfortable for me.

If we geared up like we should all the time, we would look like Ralphie's little brother in A Christmas Story.

Thanks for the feedback, but please -someone- give me the whys and wherefores of boots... I understand you think I should, I just need to understand WHY I should.

I was coming around a corner awhile back, about a block from my house with my wife on the back. I hit some gravel and the bike started to slide I put my left foot down which ended up getting wedged between the passenger floorboard and the asphalt, felt like it ripped my foot off, I limped around for a week or so. Had I not been wearing boots it would have much worse.

You should also keep in mind that good boots generally have oil resistant vibram soles which can save your ass should you ever put your foot down in a patch of oil.

That last thing RKTNMYPKT said is probably the bottom line when it comes to footwear, good motorcycle boots will minimize the trouble you are in if you step in some oil.

I found out why two weeks ago (the last time I rode my Harley) why I'm not too much of a fan of the 3/4 helmets. It was raining hard and the rain went down the front of the visor and then went up the backside of the visor...visibility near zero. I'll go back to a modular helmet as soon as I pick up my new ride.
