The south just wanted to do what the colonists did, and break away to form their own country. The south didn't attack the north.:whitstling:

My wife Ema is of Mexican Indian decent.
Early in our marriage being a confused white guy I asked her,"honey you seem to not like being called Hispanic?"

She answered me.

The Spanish came to Mexico much like the English and French came to North America.
The Spanish did to my people the same as your ancestors did to the Northern American Tribes.
I am a native Mexican Indian.

Yes dear. Sometimes history is hard.

Agreed, The North refused to allow them to succeed, but me reckons twas over their right to maintain slaves for free labor.
This boiled ever since the start of the US when the south argued against the north for extra votes based upon their number of slaves.

I'll have to take your word on that since you are old enough to have actually been there. :p :roll::roll:

Slavery was a major issue in the War between the States. However the main focus of the Southern States was on the changes made in the ratification of the Constitution of the United States which gave governing powers over the States to the Federal Government.

Before the Constitution was ratified in 1789 the Articles of Confederation adopted in 1777 were the guiding principles between the states. The major principle of the Articles was to preserve the independence and sovereignty of the states over the Federal Government..

As new territories were becoming States the Federalists were flexing their new powers by trying to stop the practice of slavery in these new States. The Kansas Territory played a major role in this leading up to its statehood. Southern states were flooding the territory with pro slave activists trying to make Kansas a slave state. The actions in Kansas from 1855 to 1861 was the fuse that ignited the Civil War.

Sorry this is one of my areas of interest. I am by no means and expert.

PS if you read the Constitution of the Confederate States you will find it follows the Articles of Confederation and not the US Constitution.

History is always written by the winners, statues coming down is not a good sign, we may be losing.

We were taught that it was the Southerners who were racist, unlike enlightened northern liberals. Surprised when I grew up and traveled, races seemed to coexist pretty well down south, up here the races don't mingle at all, bar, restaurant, walk across the street, and it's black or white, I think white people up here are generally more racist, thinking they know what's best, going to help their "less fortunate" brothers, uplift them, take care of them, like they cant take care of themselves, that's about as racist as it gets. And blacks up north are also more racist, I've been the only white guy in a bar down south and felt perfectly safe, had fun, you wouldn't want to do that up here.
It's like forcing kids to play together, they aren't going to like each other.

I hope nothing above is considered political, it's just observations and ruminations.

Well if you want to get deep into it ok. They say if we do not learn from history we are destine to repeat it.

There are a lot of similarities between what happened in 1860 and today.
The southern Democrats were furious over the election of Lincoln in 1860.
They new Lincoln favored the abolitionist movement and with the new Republican party in power they did not have the votes to over ride the President's proposals.

This lead to a number of Southern senators and congressman to walk out of Washington and form the Confederate States of America. (On another note many of these same representatives were voted back to Washington after the war.)
Up to this point in history most people's loyalty was to their states. The new found power of the Federal Government was untested.

Robert E Lee was a perfect example of this. Robert E Lee was a decorated war hero and Commandant of West Point at the time the Confederacy declared their Independence. His wife was the Granddaughter of George Washington and his home outside Washington DC was named Arlington. President Lincoln offered Lee Command of the Grand Army. Lee Declined, submitted his resignation and along with a number of other officers and cadets went south. After a lifetime of service Lee would not raise his sword against his beloved State of Virginia.

Politicians start wars and people fight them. Over 600.000 dead from 1861 to 1865. Understand that most of the southerners that fought in the war were poor and could never have afforded a slave. Slaves were owned by the money families in the south.
Black lives matter yes. We paid a heavy price for our sins.

Lincoln's plan was to send the slaves back to their native countries. His thought was if you wanted to be a part of this country you could stay, but if you wished to return to your native country so be it. His assassination by Booth put and end to that.

The corruption in Washington reared it's ugly head again. The southern Democrats founded the KKK.
Slavery was abolished, but the sharecropper farming system was put in place to keep the ex slaves indentured to the land owners in the south.

As modern farm equipment eliminated the need for manpower in the rural southern states ex slaves started to gather in the more industrial areas of the country. Discrimination was still everywhere in the south.

The civil rights struggle in the 1960's was a direct result of what was left undone at the end of the civil war. Black unemployment was through the roof. LBJ and the Democrats passed many laws under the premise of the "Great Society". Unfortunately many of the people fell into a support system that is today a new form of enslavement. They have been caught in the system relying on others for their well being for so long and we do not teach them how to get out of the system.

Racism today is not the color of your skin. Racism is the denial of the basic principal this country was founded upon. If you go back and read the Declaration of the Independence that was the founding document of these United States then you can see how far we have strayed from the intent of our founding fathers.

Today our government is in a great political battle over what our country will evolve into.

One Party wants a strong economy allowing all people to succeed in their pursuit of happiness.
The other Party wants to divide us by color and social class and make us forget we are all Americans.

Of coarse this is only my humble opinion and probably way too long.
