Checking 'bevel box' fluid level on the '06 Classic I bought a week ago. Service manual says 15 NM for drain plug and 60 NM for the fill plug......really? The online converter to ft. lbs. says that is 44 ft. lbs. 4 times more than the drain plug?

It took some muscle to loosen the fill plug. Some fluid started to dribble out and I immediately screwed the plug back in. Right now it seems very tight at 19 ft. lbs. Dare I tighten it more?

Thanks,

VR

Not the drain plug use the proper torque on it or snap it off. Seen that enough on the sites over the years

Really though since you just got the bike and it's a 06 you should completley remove the bevel box and grease the splines on the box and the rear drive shaft. This should be done as maintenance at least every tire change.

Yes, agreed, good idea........so, regarding the fill plug and the 60 NM torque specification....... should I crank the foot pounds torque up to 44 or can I leave it alone at the 19 ft. lbs. where I left it?

Thanks,

VR

Yes it is safe to torque the fill plug to 60 NM. In my opinion as an owner for over 10 years and as mechanic who changes the final drive lube every spring ... it is not necessary to torque it to 60 NM. I torque mine to 40 NM.

DEFFINATELY only torque the drain plug to 15 NM. It breaks very easily.
