It sure would be nice to get a bit more out of first gear!

So if you did change the drive ratio, would that mean the bike would cruise at lower RPMs when doing 70 in 5th gear?

This sounds like a great idea.

Very roughly speaking of course, would you forsee this one costing 4 digits?

My thoughts exactly TallTx... changing the final drive ratio would enable drag starts in first, rather than second, and give you a lower cruising RPM. Also would increase top speed for those with the HP.

Mass produced automotive rears (gears) are quite reasonable due to volume of production... I have no idea what a small run of custom gears for the R3 would be, but I'd like to find out.

So far we have 2 interested...
 
I think it could be an interesting mod. Even as close to stock as mine is, it's bouncing off the rev limiter before you can blink when you nail it in first. My darkside rear tire helps that some, as it is a tad taller than the Metz. Dropped my 65 mph cruising speed by about 200 rpm.
