I have seen reported here on the forum that the check has been moved to 20,000 miles. That sounds reasonable. I am crazy nuts about maintaining my bike, but I think the 10,000 mile number is stupid. I haven't read of anyone on the forum having an issue at that point in time, so I don't think I'm going to do it at 10,000. Anyone had an issues at 10,000 miles??? I'm coming up on that number shortly, so I guess I'll need to talk to a couple dealers and make the decision. From my perspective, excess clearance should result in some subtle increase in noise. I dont hear that.
If I have done all the other things on the list myself (which I will have done as routine maintenance) it should cut a considerable chunk off the cost of the bill for just doing a valve clearance check. Quite frankly, I can't say as I feel comfortable with most dealers doing a competent job on the valve check or even doing it at all. Do they even stock the shims? I think there are a lot of know nothing mechanics working at the dealerships. I guess I'm going to have to find a dealer with a mechanic I can trust.
