Subaru XV or maybe a Forester. New. The top end models have HID here. And can come ex-factory in Dual-Fuel (Petrol and LPG). LPG is much much cheaper (as it is "Green"). Maybe not a consideration in the US but in the EU very much so.

I have still not entirely dropped the Pick-Up idea but "She who must be obeyed" has reservations about Diesel as they're getting really funny about emission in major cites here. Not to mention that any pick up would be almost a metre longer than the LandRover let alone her car (which is what would be replaced).
