Valve clearance adjustment must be carried out with the engine cold.

1.Remove the fuel tank .

2.Remove the intake duct.

3.Disconnect the spark plug leads from the spark plugs then remove the coil brackets with the coils attached

4.Remove all the bolts and bolt-seals from the cam cover.

5.Raise the cover and manoeuvre it towards the right hand side of the engine.

6.Remove a spark plug from each cylinder to reduce compression resistance when turning the engine.

7.Select a high gear and, using the rear wheel, turn the engine over
until a pair of camshaft lobes are positioned pointing directly away from the valves.

8.Correct valve clearances are in the range given in the table below.
Inlet 0.10 to 0.15 mm
Exhaust 0.15 to 0.20 mm

9.Using feeler gauges, measure and record the clearances for this pair of valves only.

10.Repeat the process until the clearances for all valves have been checked.

11.If any of the recorded clearances fall outside the specified range, adjustments must be made.

12.If all measured clearances are within tolerance, refit all.

Nice post rocket. You make it look like something that even I could do!!!

Are there symptoms or indications that one should open and check the valve clearances?

I checked two rockets 2005

inlet 0.11 0.13 0.17 0.16 0.15 0.15
exhaust 0.20 0.19 0.23 0.22 0.23 0.22

inlet 0.08 0.10 0.12 0.12 0.11 0.11
exhaust 0.23 0.23 0.19 0.22 0.24 0.23

inlet must be >0.10 and <0.15
exhaust must be >0.15 and < 0.20

This can effect engine noise and/or improper running.

I too would like to see whats involved with the shims and adjustment...I need to do this, but am waiting until I resolve my new cam situation first

followed the instructions, went really easy

10 13 10 10 10 10

23 23 20 20 18 20

2005 rocket with bit over 20,000 miles

will attempt the shim adjustment next.
