Hi, Ive booked a trip in June to ride the Alps. Im gonna base my self on the French border with Italy and spend the week riding the alpine passes.

the question is am I mad to do this on my Roadster ?:eek:

Can anyone who has tried similar let me know how the beast handles itself around the tighter mountain roads.

Ive done this sort of tour before, but 1st time was on a Triumph sprint and second time on a BMW GS, and that was in Spain.

The plan is to leave home on the Saturday and spend 2 days getting there via the Chunnel.

Any advice apprieciated, ive had the Rocket a year now so am happy with it on standard British roads, just have not had the chance to try it on real tight twisties:D

well if you wish to see some pictures of alps riding on a R3 go to the thread "riding in Paradise" you will find tons of good advises info and pictures , I have spent the summer of 2012 with my R3 riding every mountain passes in the alps france italy austria and Switzerland .I also can suggest some absolutely fabulous roads in and around the alpes maritimes in france and around cortina d'ampezzo in italy etc etc etc etc PM me and I will tell the tale

somethin fishy happened on the thread ..Markmywordz should get the reply ...weird!

Higher altitude= less oxygen= less power. I live near the ocean and only noticed it slightly hitting higher altitudes going cross country. The Alps might be a different story.. ;) My buddy works for CNN he covered the Tour de France and said the French and Swiss Alps was one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

My wife and I rode through last summer (July). She didn't have any issues on her TripleR, and I didn't have any problems with the altitudes or the roads on the rocket (07 Classic). We came up from Italy through the lake regions and the Italian Alps, then north through St Moritz and following the line to Liechtenstein, then back across Switzerland to French Alps then north to the Black Forest. Highest point was around 2300 Meters. No issues, just a beautiful ride! The R3 handles great through the twisties at all speeds, though your floorboards might take a beating :D Ride at your comfort for the roads, and don't worry about the R3, she's not too heavy to lean and has got plenty of performance to take care of you!!

here is the link to riding in Paradise with time some of the pictures are somehow no longer visible but you get the idea

go to the search type in riding in paradise in title only thread from albertaduke and that should do it also I did not know how to post pic in the beginning but from page 10 they are on picasaweb

I just looked at the whole thing just an hour ago one photo album is missing but you will get the drift.

I've done routes through the Swiss/Italian/Austrian Alps loads of times. Though not on an R3 - on my old Guzzi when she wasn't old.

There are a fair number of R3 owners down around Lake Constance.

The only thing I'll say is watch out for gravel on tight hairpins if it's been raining in mid summer.
