The new Avon Cobras Chromes or Bridgestone Exedra 240/55/R16 and a smaller 140 front like a Michelin Commander or some are now using reversed rear performance 150 tires on the front like @1olbull does.
If you are planning an around Oz trip and multiple 1000 mile trips up and down the East coast as you appear to be doing I would stick to the Exedras and try a front Chrome or go completely FR and R with Avon Cobra Chromes.
