Ishrub's rant for the day:
It is the Gallipoli thing mate, we all like to blame the bloody POMs for that fiasco too! Turkey, Australia, NZ and UK fought together (instead of foes) in the Korean war too as UN forces and forged bonds .
My great uncle, an artillery range finder, was killed 5 May 1915, a couple of weeks after the Gallipoli campaign started.
As Ataturk famously but possibly never actually said*: http://www.turkeytravelcentre.com/blog/ataturks-speech-about-gallipoli-turkish-history/
In 1934, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk wrote the famous words that reached out to the mothers of his former enemies.
“Those heroes that shed their blood
And lost their lives.
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
Therefore, rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side
Here in this country of ours,
You, the mothers,
Who sent their sons from far away countries
Wipe away your tears,
Your sons are now lying in our bosom
And are in peace
After having lost their lives on this land they have
The heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives on this country's soil! You are in the soil of a friendly country now. Therefore rest in peace. You are side by side with the little Mehmets. The mothers who send their sons to the war! Wipe your tears away. Your sons are in our bosom, are in peace and will be sleeping in peace comfortably. From now on, they have became our sons since they have lost their lives on this land.
Mustafa Kemel Ataturk's letter when read out in a Turkish accent always brings a lump to this not so old Aussies throat
Thanks for posting this moving message to the many still grieving Widows ,Mothers and children of our fallen Diggers
