Lifter Shaft

Lifter shaft snapped in half yesterday..no warning just bang and it's gone
Guess i was lucky in the fact i was just about to leave home
You guy's know how much i like this bike..but i'm getting a bit pissed off with it now
I take great care of it and **** like this happens..it seems to be one thing after another.

This happens if it is adjusted incorrectly or you are using an after market clutch,with correct adjustment it should be ok .Takes about 4 hours to replace.

Peter is right they break do to improper adjustment. Also if you sit there and pull the clutch in a rev it up to show it off you will burn the shft and weaken it. Then snap it goes. You should look at the lifter piece while you in there to make sure it is not mared up or it will screw your new shaft up. 4 hours is what they give Triumph techs. After the first one you can at least cut a hour off the time. I can do mine in two hours even with pulling the blower off.
Of course once you get the adjustment down and understand the feel. This problem will go away. I have not broke one in a few years. And I am kind of ruff on my beast!!
You should change to the lifter piece with the larger head if yours does not have on installed.

I have the standard clutch and i don't abuse it..the bike as 5000 miles on it simply
because it's not my only bike.
Kinda getting to lose confidence in it..what with this and ignition switch and other
stupid issues..might not have her much longer

no one is saying you abuse your bike. its just a fact that the lifter shaft consistantly breaks when the free play is set wrong. Also your can break it from over rotation of the lifter shaft. most likely is was the adjustment and set up.

Mine just turned over 46,000 miles with the original lifter shaft (knock on wood) ! I always take my bike out of gear when sitting at lights. I also don't rev the engine with the clutch pulled in (just in case it does break). I do carry one with me on trips. I could change it in a hotel parking lot if I had to.

Hey warp. If you were in my situation would you change it just because it's old (lots of miles) or leave well enough alone ?

I would not change it unless its broke or you have the front open and notice its wore or wearing. It can be changed in a parking lot but it will take some work as you have to drain the fluids.
