Bipartisan motorcycle only checkpoint bill to be introduced in the U.S. Senate

Within the coming weeks, supporters of the motorcycle lifestyle in the U.S. Senate will introduce a bipartisan bill to ban federal funding for motorcycle only checkpoints.

The Senate bill will prevent the Secretary of Transportation from issuing grants intended to support the creation of “checkpoints for an operator of a motorcycle or a passenger on a motorcycle.”

Currently, only New Hampshire, Illinois, California, Missouri and Virginia have restrictions on motorcycle only checkpoints. This has allowed other states to continue to employ this discriminatory and ineffective practice, especially during rallies and other large motorcycle events, such as Rolling Thunder in Washington, D.C. and the Daytona Bike Week in Daytona, Florida.

This will be the Senate version of H.R. 1861, the Stop Motorcycle Checkpoint Funding Act.

For further information regarding MOCs – and the motorcycling community’s efforts to end them – please visit the AMA’s MOC webpage.

When this bill is introduced the American Motorcyclist Association will call upon you to communicate with your elected officials urging them to support this important measure. Thank you in advance for your support. Additionally, if you have been involved in a MOC, please tell us about it by using the form below.

If what you say is true - then our support for the bill can't possibly hurt and might help. Seems as if it's worth a couple of minutes of effort.
I'm a AMA member..lets hope so. The ones they really want are covered under Rico..;)

I don't understand what you're getting at . . . if this bill passes and is signed into law, the Secretary of Transportation will be barred from issuing Federal grants for setting up motorcycle only checkpoints. I don't see how this inconveniences us as motorcyclists. Some of these "checkpoints" - especially the ones set up outside of big bike rallies - create traffic backups which can stretch over many miles - and they're discriminatory to boot.

I think this is an effort worthy of the support of motorcyclists all over the US. I hope the rest of us will support the AMA in this effort.

I hear what your saying. I was referring to the check point stopping. Sorry for the confusion i totally agree with your stance on this..:thumbsup:

Being from NY (I'm shocked they don't pull that garbage here).....I would think this is a very gray area. The reaosn they are allowed to have road checks for tractor trailers is becasue they are listed as commerial vech. They are regulated as road use is tied to commerce....when there is cash there is uncle Sam.....but, riding a bike is not. To single out vechicle types under (I assume safty violations) must have probable casue. You cannot single out a single group for any kind of stop...a stop is defined in penal law as a form of arrest. I will be totally honest here...I will take the ticket for blowing right by these. You need to have justifiaction for a stop. Prior to the point...

I know..I know.....I'm no lawyer....just sick of losing my rights......also being from NYS.....repeal the SAFE act...another load of garbage...
