We also have firearms (guns?) ,although not allowed autofire ,machine guns etc. One must be licensed etc to be legal. Many illegal folk have firearms for sure.

And can you own pistols?

Yes, under certain licensing rules. No carrying about on ones person though. Not general public.

If it wasn't for lane splitting my commute when I was stationed in California (San Jose area 1979 to 1989) would have easily been two to three times as long. Done correctly (read that as sanely) there are no issues with lane splitting. One thing for sure you do have to keepp your head out of your ass while doing it. As hyper vigilant you should be anyhow riding a bike it gets even more so when splitting lanes. It helps that the people driving cars are accustomed to it, as they are in CA.

Too bad....especially with the state of non-moving traffic you folks have in the Metro area. Many California riders still split in the other states....maybe not quite as much but as traffic calls for it. As for enforcement, unless they are on two wheels, its pretty tough for them to catch me 50 cars ahead. ; )
