Well, I haven't touched the bike since I got it home from ES. I've been riding the KLR and the Bonnie while the R3 has been languishing in the garage, dirty and bug splattered, awaiting a trip too Marne and Gus' able hands. Well...

I get her out of the garage because I want to take her out at least presentable and she starts right up. No problem. I go to pull out of the garage to wash her and I hear....I can't believe it.....The dreaded Paint Can Rattle. I neve heard it before. At 1200 rpm, it sounds just like someone rattling the steel ball in a paint can. Its loud. I also have some other odd sound in there. Hope it makes it up on the trailer for the trip. So now I have...

TDU bearing
Rubber shifter
Paint can rattle
Other odd sounds...

Triumph may decide a new engine is better. We shall see.

yes, you have long doubted.

Hey thar friend. I've yet to get my pannier stiffener installed; the galled stainless screws are a *****! It's the lower sprocket on your 05. (Do an oil change, I'll bet it's real close.) And I truly believe the same silver greys input into the 07 Tourer have the same issue' I swear my Tourer has a left-over 05 engine. Yours has lasted this long becasue of age. Your's not the Beast.

I've yet to hear of a full sprocket, gear, and tensioner not resolving the issure, though I doubt the tensioner is THE problem. The key linking the crank to the sprocket is the failure point, IMHO. CHEAP **** keys get screwed under pressures. The sprocket gets to wobbling and the chain is damaged. Replacing only the gear and key (still likely to be crap steal) and the new gear is beat up by an imperfect chain. Sure we'd much prefer a key replacement than a crank but why not put it together right the first time.

But, I must confess. I don't let any of it deter me from braking the rules. The beast is the shiznits and you can take your KLM and park it, flipper:D

I've taken the FBG back for full resolution but they don't hear ****. That's because THEY don't have a clue. Were any R3 mechanics to know as well as a full timeR3 rider what a "weird", or "strange" noise is, which is AGAIN quite apparent on mine, then maybe I'd have a chance at resolution. I too have a rise of the rattle inn the 12-20k range when not yet brought up to oil pressure or viscosity levels necessary for quieting the noise down to a roar. I'm exaggerating alot! But I have sensitive feelings:D But even at cruise the beer can rattle it above the valve tap. I prefer a tap over a rattle.

I hope that the exaggateration is in part the 20k rpm :D

Here it is..

For those of you who have not heard the "Paint can Rattle", here it is. Going in for the upgrade kit soon. Covered by Triumph. '07 standard with about 11K miles on it. Noise started on way back from Sturgis in Yellowstone.

Mine is a lot louder than your sound clip and no, I'm only 3K into this oil change. At 12-15 hundred rpm, it sounds like a kid with marbles in his pocket playing pocket pool.

I strongly suspect that my engine has had the last 1300 miles or so to circulate the TDU bearing debris throughout and go a long way toward destroying it.

From One Who Has Been There

Mitchcpc,

You have captured it perfectly. Mine did it for almost 10 thousand miles before Triumph replaced the cam chain and sprockets.

Closer Inspection Required

Mitch:

Thanks for posting the sound clip. I must say that I thought that the infamous "paint can rattle" was a lot louder based upon the posted information on curing it, but am never the less glad you passed on that sound bite to educate those of us who have been blessed with NOT hearing it!

I don't know if I will be able to hear that "rattle" over the sound of the TOR's and the fact that I am deaf (just ask my wife). Maybe I had better start doing periodic diagnostic listening with my stethescope.

I hope Triumph takes care of you and Flip both...Good Luck...S.B.

Is this just an 05 thing? I was told there were problems with the 04 engines, don't know if that's 05 model year. I figured I was safe with an 06.
