As I ponder exactly which model and configuration Rocket I will buy, I've been told that the black engine coating is much harder to clean and keep clean than the alternative. Is this really so and if it is true, what do you black engine lovers do or use to accomplish the task or to make the job easier?

Captain Richard's Best

I use Captain Richard's Best on the whole bike, have used it on my Harleys for years (when I started using it it was called the BOM), and love it on the RIII, too. I can't compare to a silver 'rumph motor since I only have the one, but I have used the Capt Richard's on my silver Hog engines and the black RIII engine has proven no more difficult to clean. I only wash my bikes with soap and water once a year, and that's first clean after the winter to get all the WD-40 I spray on 'em back off again. After that, it's nothing but Capt Richard's. You spray the stuff on a damp cloth, wipe the bike (clean or dirty, doesn't matter), then polish with a clean dry microfiber and she's beautiful again.

I'm with you, Mike, on Cap'n Richards products - they are excellent. Boms Away was the best and easiest product I knew of for cleaning/polishing aluminum until my dear wifey (who owns a jewelry store) turned me on to Major Shine and Colonel Brassy. Those two products are otherworldly for metals and more!

I prefer Capt'in Morgan myself. Spiced rum on ice. The the bike gets washed.

On the subject of the black engine and bike, I use diluted Purple Power from Aiken Chemical and high pressure silicone and a paint brush to keep the black motor looking satin black.

Yer killin me, Flip! ROTFLMAO
I feel compelled, now, to plug Cardinal Mendoza. The only thing it'll cleanse however, is your soul. LOL

Truthfully, I think that the last person to tell me that the black was a bee-otch to clean, was a guy trying to sell me his ride, which just happened to have the lighter engine color.;)

Actually I think black does a good job of hiding the oil and road grime. I use scrubbing bubbles bathroom cleaner. Spray it on, hose it off.

I've had zero trouble keeping the block looking new with just soap and water ... my problem is chrome. Ever since the dealer left it in the rain for three days I can't get all the spots off.

Major Shine would do the trick on that, Hellfire. You can find it here: Home Page Also, i think that flitz will remove those spots as well.
