I've been following the fusion news, I'm actually more surprised there isn't more news about SMR's (Small Modular Reactors). That was the latest 'thing' in energy production development when I retired in 2017.
There is strong interest in small and simpler units for generating electricity from nuclear power, and for process heat. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) represent a broad suite of designs that seek to apply the principles of modularity, factory fabrication, and serial production to nuclear energy.
They plan on building one on the Clinched River in Tennessee. BUT it's only to see if it's cost effective to build more. It won't ever go online. If TVA sees that it's worth it they will do 20 of them. So they say. It's TVA so you can't believe anything they say.
