Totally dependent upon the individual. One person's necessary is another's frivolity. I consider very bright headlights a safety issue and, therefore, necessary. It's all in your perspective.
People spend very big bucks on chrome, custom paint and performance enhancements, none of which are "necessary"....yes?
I'm just sorry motolink didn't think the high beams were up to his expectations.
I have the daymakers on order. Should be here on Tuesday April 14th. In the mean time my ignition took a crap. I found the the power wire in and the wire out to fuse #9 were no longer soldered. So I fixed the solder joint and added a relay so there is very little current going through the ignition.
Now addin the LED headlights I won't have to worry about the battery powering the lights (robbing current) and then trying to start. I didn't like the beaver kit... doesn;t make sense to me.
why not?..I thought it was a nice product..as a matter of fact I got the 'three plug solution' fuse kit I think he called it, along with the double horn relay kit when I got the headlight relay kit..well made.
I think that because I'm in Arizona I don't have a problem with the lights being on during the start (its normally not very cod here). I added the LED Daymaker headlights which also lowers the current used and I added a relay to bypass the ignition and route the load through the relay. All my ignition switch does now is supply power (low current) to trip a relay that actually carries the load. I don't have the schematic in front of me, but I believe it was a white wire in the ignition that supplied power to a yellow and brown. The yellow and brown carry the majority of the load to the fuse box at fuses 7, 8, 9 and 10.
The Daymakers are sweet. Many times better than the stock! There is a lack of light to the side of the bike (stock was better) but my Aux lights fill that gap. Very please with the Daymakers.
This is interesting because it reveals a wider and brighter pattern but just not that much of an increase in distance. Seems like about 50 ft. farther with the LEDs.
What I wonder is, not how far I can see but how well the pattern is lit up! It has been my experience that the illuminated area is illuminated better...if that makes any sense.
Oh...and the color of the light makes a HUGE difference. There is no yellowness in the pure WHITE LED light which gives illuminated objects far more clarity and realism. Illuminated signs pop out at you and the illuminated pattern has the look of daylight.
Maybe not completely quantifiable but certainly a better ride in the dark!
Moto...I am so disappointed that you are disappointed.
Zen, there is no doubt about the low beam improvement, I am just no sure how much better hi beam is going to be. I need a good night ride to give hi beam a good test. So far I have only been out at night to adjust them.
I certainly give an up date.
