at the risk of making myself look like a total dickhead I am going to ask this anyway!

What is the optimum point in time to check the oil level?

Usually, I put the bike on the 'Flip" maintenance stand and run it for about 5 minutes then shut it off and then check the oil level within the next minute or so.

I did this the other day and the oil level was a gnats foreskin below the mark.

I went to the coast and back (about 380klms round trip) and checked it as soon as i shut it down and the level was over the mark.

That was 2 days ago..... I just went and checked it as I normally do and it is now showing almost no oil!!

Be kind with your replies Captains I know it's a silly question.

Maybe takin after the owner and drinking it :p:D

When the bike stands its not unusual for all the oil to drain into the sump its just the O ring on the sump plug passing..

You have to run it for a few minute for the scavenger pump to lift the oil up into the tank.. I dip mine sitting on it so its level usually every couple of weeks or before a long run.. it depends really how often you ride but weekly if ya worried..

JMHO

yep always do mine on the centre stand but seem to be getting conflicting readings depending on use and time frame.

Well I wouldn't worry too much as the dipstick is just a guide really the oil flow system chart is in the manual if you have a look.
There are many pockets and places in the crankcase and cyl head that oil can get caught up.. If it is on the top or even between the marks it should be fine..
I think there may always be a little level variation IMO..:)

long as you check it the SAME every time, you should get the same reading.
The "proper way" is to stand it up and check it.
I marked my dipstick when I changed the oil.
I ran her in for an hour or so.
Let her cool completely off,
then checked her and marked the dipstick after an hour or so of her sitting.
That way I can just go out check her cold and she should be right on the mark.
Hope this helps.
