should i have any amp reading at the positive battery cable when motor not running?

such a low power consumption you should get only a few milliamps being used by clock & alarm if fitted, if not then nothing as I know of, so any current shown would be earth leakage, & best of luck finding it.

Before answering your question, I am wondering how you are connecting your ammeter.

Are you disconnecting the positive cable and then connecting the ammeter between the post and the cable? If so, Captan Jack is correct. the reading should be VERY small.

If you are connecting the ammeter to the positive cable as it is connected to the battery and then grounding the other lead of the ammeter your ammeter will 'peg out' and read a large amount of current. Connecting an ammeter in this fashion can burn out the ammeter or burn out the fuse that protects the ammeter.
