93 octane

Here's my take on it, here in my state 87 and 89 are always running dry at that pump .Premium is over $4.00 a gallon and most folks won't spend the extra money so it sits in the tank for who knows how long or how stale it is . They'll go to another gas station before filling up with premium. I've always run 89 in the Rocket most of the time with no problem but every once and a while i'll get a tank full that will ping. i guess it depends on how frequently and reasonablely priced each gas station is that determines the quality of gas. All i know when i put 93 octane in the Rocket i noticed a smoother ride no pinging in the Mt.ranges..

If your engine pings on 89 (equivalent to 91 here) it's most likely due to a timing issue. These are low compression motors and simply don't need higher octane fuel IF THEY'RE TUNED CORRECTLY. I find that my bike runs smoother, quieter, starts easier and is more economical on 91. On the odd occasion I've had to use 95 or 98 I've noticed no difference in performance and lower mileage. I'd be getting the timing seen to and saving around $3 a tank. I used to put that much in a jar every time I filled up and bought a leather jacket with it. Better than wasting it out the exhaust pipe.

Run mine on 95 here in Germany. Always ran 89 in the states. But here, anything less than 95 has ethanol in it. Our prices are reasonable by European standards (until you run out of rations). US ration price, $4.15/gallon for the 95O; out of rations, 1.65 Euro/litre (little over $7.50/gallon)

Well, if you want to compare old farts, I can remember as a kid, taking my bicycle to the gas station for a gallon of gas for the lawn mower. With a quarter, I could get a gallon of gas, AND a candy bar to eat while peddling home! (64 this month).

I remember 35c a gallon!

I remember. 23 per gallon at my Dad's station. I remember thinking several years ago they would not be happy until it was over 2.00 a gallon! Now I doubt we will ever see it below 3.00 a gallon.

What ticks me off here in Michigan is that come Wednesday the jobbers put it up several cents until Sunday evening/Monday.
Has nothing to do with supply and demand, just screwing John Q Public when the go on a short weekend vacation or to Mom's house.

Funny, my experience has been quit the opposite. My bike does not seem to like
higher octane fuel which I equated to the low compression ration.

hi
i was in yukon outside of oklahoma city in the early 60's and pumped gas all day long for 20 cents a gal. when in the price wars it dropped down to 17 cents a gal.
i was just a young buck and thought i knew everything and drove a fast machine. things are still the same except i am an old buck and gas prices are 20 times higher.
