I took my R3 key to the lockshop the other day to get a spare made. I wanted one to carry in my wallet. I figuired if they had one I could cut the black plastic off the head and fit it in my wallet. Well, of course they did not have a Triumph R3 key blank. but the old guy who owned the place said "heck, you don't need no Triumph motorcycle key blank for that bike, Volvo keys have the same keyway." So he grabbed a ilco VL6 key blank and cut away. Works great, no plastic on the head so it fits into the wallet, and best of all, only cost $2.50 !!!! The least expensive things I have bought for this bike yet. Works in all three locks, ignition, seat and gas cap. Not sure if all years are the same, mine is an 07 R3 standard.

That is cool . . . who would've thought a car ignition key would work on a bike . . . a locksmith of course.

Good information . . . I'm gonna go see if my locksmith has Triumph blanks and if he doesn't . . .if you knows of a good match up replacement.

My, what a timely post...I was just going to purchase a couple of $13 key blanks to get some extra keys cut.

Handy place for a spare key.

Like all my bikes, I zip-tied my spare key up under the head lamps where no one could see it 3 years ago as I typically don't carry a wallet (NY thing).

Well, it paid off.

Two weeks ago I was at a bar and removed the seat to get my gloves when I got distracted by people asking questions about the bike and left the key on top of the tool kit and locked the seat. Ah crap.

No worries though and luckily none of the other bikers noticed my blunder.

I nonchalantly walked into the restaurant and borrowed a steak knife, went back to the bike, pretended to adjust the horn, and clipped off my spare key.

No one was the wiser.

This was much simpler than when I lost my dirt bike key swimming up in the mountains 30+ years ago and had to cut a bunch of wires to hot-wire it to get home.

When I was 17 I had a bunch of buddies in my dads '62 Galaxie and we went to the beach. I nonchalantly buried the car keys under the corner of the towel before I went in the water. While I was in the water some girls started playing volleyball and my buddies moved the towels about a foot to give them room. ....

When it was time to go I dug a pretty **** big hole before the keys were exposed by the sand caving into the crater I was frantically digging.

I agree......the timing was perfect, I was about to do the same thing!!

Not just have a spare but on a trip make sure you have two with you. Never know if you're gonna have battery or electric problems that prevent starting the bike so if the bike runs ok then with two keys you can keep the bike going while also being able to fill her at a stop without shutting her down.

Few weeks ago, the battery on my friend's bike went to crap. Had to push start him but at least he had two keys and could run the bike most of the day and back home. Try push starting a Rocket. Forget it. Better bring jumper cables.

Good tip RRM.

Had a fright a couple of months ago - 300 miles away from home & lost my key & alarm fob at a m/c event.

Pure luck that a steward had found them & handed them in.

Never go out of the county now without a spare set.
