As I posted yesterday, I upgraded my R3 with Jars, Uni's and Windvest Screen. Went down to the dealers with my laptop and loaded the Tuneboy 20145_1 tune created for this hardware configuration... First thing I noticed was the rough idle during the twelve minute tune... I figured ok, maybe that will fix itself as the ECU adjusts to this new configuration... Went out for my first ride... I was NOT disappointed by the performance.... 10-15% boost from the underseat K&N, Stock Pipes and 20050_2 tune I was running... I am being conservative here!!! Only thing I didn't like was the large amount of decel popping (not backfiring) when dumping the throttle... Especially when the revs went past 2500 in first or second gear.... Went to investigate how to solve this... Mentioned a little about this on yesterdays thread... Based on the replies and other investigation on this forum, here is what I did:
- In a previous post talltxguy recommended making the bottom row and next to bottom row on the F and L tables the same... If that did not eliminate the popping, increase the fuel trim on the bottom two rows in 1% increments. Cranked the trim all the way to 5% after making the bottom most F and L table rows match and it did little if anything to decrease the popping. In fact, the engine started to bog a little when cranking the throttle back on after decel due to the extra fuel....
- Dougl then suggested to take the bottom L table rows from his variant of the 20050_2 tune that fixes decel popping for the TOR configuration and apply those numbers to the bottom L table rows of 20145_1... I tried this and decel popping did not improve at all.
- 1fstHombre then arrived in my e-mail this morning and I installed it.. First thing I noticed was the idle was more stable... Ironic since the 2014x series of tunes was supposed to fix idle problems. Took it out for a spin and decel popping decreased by 50 or 60%... Ok great!!! I now took the bottom L table rows from the Dougl tune and applied them to 1fstHombre... I have now eliminated about 85% of the decel popping.. Its still there, but only under extreme throttle dumps in 1st gear.... So I am going to stick with 1fstHombre for now... Seat of the pants dyno says performance is about the same as 20145_1...
- Several have also suggested to check for exhaust leaks as this is a common cause of decel popping... Lit one of my stogies and held it around the exhaust ports, collector, etc. and I could not detect any obvious leaks. I will have my dealer recheck the Jars next week....
So why does 1fstHombre work better on my bike???? Wayne from Tuneboy in one of his previous posts stated that Triumph changed the ECU "executive" or OS to solve the idle problem. The data tables for all tunes were left unchanged from the 2005x versions. Perhaps that change in the executive (at idle or "0" TP positions) has changed the way those bottom rows are handled in terms of curing decel popping... Just an intuitive guess on my part...
Any other ideas, please advise!!!!
Many Thanks,
Mike...
