This should be simple, headlights don't work

Oh hey tdragger! Good to "see" ya! Yea, I'm still here, hangin on. You know you only hear from me when I have a problem- I guess I've been pretty lucky that way... maybe that relay was stuck... but here is the end of this story: I was putting everything back to together, resigned to ride...

This should be simple, headlights don't work

BTW, I also checked voltage across batt terminals, 12.4V off, 14.4V at idle. And, took the high/low beam switch apart. Contacts slightly dark, not bad at all, but I cleaned with eraser and put it all back together. Even tried two more new bulbs. No joy...

This should be simple, headlights don't work

Thank-you! It may come to that! I used to have some skills, I've been retired for awhile and so I'm much less confident in getting in over my head on this. Like the thread said, dammit, this should be simple! haha

This should be simple, headlights don't work

I've got the Service Manual... I don't want to attempt wire tracing on this bike, though. Finding someone, that's the trick. I'll update when this is fixed! Thanks, all...

This should be simple, headlights don't work

you're so right, I do. unfortunate for me I'm in a new area where there are no mc shops, and my registration is about to run out, and i'm in a new state, and the DMV u can't even get them on the phone to get an appointment...have no idea what passes for a mc inspection in nc nor where to get...

Here's the bulb that I figured blew (and was the only problem I had), and I opted to just replace both of them with sylvania's.

This should be simple, headlights don't work

Yea, my diagnostic skills are pretty limited--- to put it mildly! The bulbs do not light. I only checked for voltage on the connector blades, not plugged into bulb, no load.

This should be simple, headlights don't work

I'm happy to try, soon as I figure out where to get one... tomorrow... but if fuse is bad wouldn't all the other circuits on that position be affected and would I be seeing 12 volts at the head light connectors? [EDIT] Did pull fuse in position 9, which is a 20A fuse for the upper and lower...

This should be simple, headlights don't work

So I've had this bike since 2004, have probably had one headlight bulb go bad over the years. Recently I moved and had a 6 hour ride to get to my new garage. Get on the bike to go and suddenly the headlights don't light. Didn't have time to deal with, so ran with fog lights and hoped for the...

    Strange item in photo ....

I know this is a RIII forum but I suspect you could tell a few tales about the design and build of that house- what is shown is frankly breathtaking, how fortunate are you!!

    Final drive unit

15 Nm torque and use of calibrated torque wrench required in my opinion. Changing out this oil is one of the few things I do myself and do not allow a mechanic to do. Found out the hard way when one sheared off the head but just left it in there and didn't bother to mention it. I didn't...

Will keep it in mind, for sure. For now at least, cleaning the changeover (starter) relay and packing with dielectric grease has eliminated the problem. I did also pick up a new relay as a back-up. Thanks!

This is how things looked when I pulled the cover. Not that bad, right? I cleaned it as best I could, leaving the blades alone because I didn't have any dielectric grease here at the house, plugged it back in and as I said before, WALA. So I put everything back together that I'd...

Thanks for that advice. I have found the site, interestingly they have a link for 2006 RIII but not 2005. I'll call them, though. I'm sure it's the same. But I will get original stock for sure. Sounds good.

so anyway, the rubber bracket that holds the two relays up was of course dry rotted, but the starter relay was still upright. The flasher relay was kind of fallen over, but neither showed signed of having been wet. Unplugged the starter relay and grease still on the connectors, not a lot, but...
