Welcome from West Michigan ! I never run mine under 2000 rpms unless I'm in 1st gear. Your clutch is probably slipping a bit. Hopefully the previous owner didn't run car oil in it. It has friction modifiers in it that wet clutches don't like. Also make sure it is set exactly to the book.
