This is a carry over from the earlier thread "R3 and gravel highways?", some other people had expressed interest in the idea so I thought I'd provide some details of what I'm planning. I'm looking to start this in June but nothing definite at this point, if not then it will have to be July. Total trip will take 2-3 weeks, distance is 4,000-5,500 miles depending on the route that I will take, more details below.

Original plan: This is a bit ambitious and most likely will not happen. It covers some 600 miles of gravel road on the Trans-Labrador Highway, a feat I doubt I will attempt on a R3. Highlights include
Manicouagan Crater, Quebec
Saguenay Fjord, Quebec
Viking Settlement in L'anse aux Meadows, NL
Gros Morne National Park, NL
Eastern most point in North America near St John's, NL
Cabot Trail, NS
Bay of Fundy, Maritimes
Saint John, NB (oldest town in CA)
Perce Rock, Quebec (end of the Appalacian mountains)

In order to avoid the vast expanse of gravel highway I came up with a plan B which will only put me on gravel for about 100 miles. I'll be giving up Manicouagan Crater but gaining the northern end of paved road in the Eastern part of North America (it's a stretch but still a story to take home). After starting to do some more refinement to the map I happened to find out that ferry service from Cartwright Labrador to NL will be permanently canceled after this season, there's a rumor it may continue but the official word from the gov't is that it will go away. Given this information plan B no longer makes much sense, that 100 miles of gravel to Cartwright would have to be driven up and back to NL (now 200 miles), not worth the 500 miles round trip, looking at that then it is also not worth going to the Viking settlement in NE NL so I cut that out as well saving me an additional 300 miles. This is most likely going to be the final plan for the trip, additional miles may be added in the Maritimes if time permits. I've left out a lot of New England destinations because, quite honestly, I've been there and done that, I'd much rather spend more time in Canada. If anyone would like to contribute ideas to the trip please feel free to do so. For those who expressed interest in going on some part of this trip (or the entire thing) feel free to do so. I will update this once my rough map is finalized and the dates firm up a bit.

great plan ! may I suggest dropping south to Halifax and ride around mahone bay a very scenic area. .
your crossing into seven islands on the north shore and subsequent ride to chicoutimi will probably be a lot more sedate than the south side of the saint lawrence river.
been there seen it .
